How this test measures
The test runs against the nearest Cloudflare data center, shown above as the server. Results describe the path between you and that server, which can differ from the path to a particular website, game or call server.
Ping is the median round-trip time of 60 small requests, and jitter is the average difference between consecutive ones. Download and upload use files of growing size sent one after another over a single connection, and the result is the 90th percentile of the requests that ran long enough to be reliable. Speeds are in megabits per second (1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits).
Because it uses one connection, the test can read lower than a multi-connection test on very fast or distant links. Wi-Fi, a VPN, other devices and a busy browser can all lower the result, so use a cable and close other apps for the most accurate number. Nothing from the test is stored on our servers.
Powered by Cloudflare's network. No account needed.
Run the test below to check your EPB Fiber Optics speed. EPB is the fiber network run by Chattanooga's electric utility, and its plans are symmetrical, so upload speed should be close to download.
What speeds to expect
EPB sells gigabit and multi-gigabit fiber plans in its service area. On a wired connection you should see results close to your plan's speed, and upload close to download. Check the speed of your plan on your bill, since the plan list and prices change.
Wi-Fi is usually slower than the line. Many routers and most phones and laptops cannot reach multi-gigabit speeds over Wi-Fi, so a result below your plan on Wi-Fi is often normal.
How to test your fiber accurately
- Use Ethernet from a computer with a gigabit (or faster) port and a Cat5e or better cable.
- Close other apps and pause other devices.
- Test two or three times and look at the highest result.
- Test again on Wi-Fi, from the room where you use the internet.
If your speed is lower than your plan
- Check the cable and port. A damaged or old Cat5 cable limits a link to 100 Mbps.
- Check the network card. Some computers and adapters only support 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps.
- Check the router. Older routers can limit a fast plan.
- Restart the equipment and test again.
- Contact EPB if wired speed is still far below your plan.
