Cookie Policy
Last updated November 8, 2026
This page lists every cookie and piece of browser storage SpeedTestGO uses, so you can see exactly what is on your device and why.
1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores on your device. We also use your browser's local storage, which works in a similar way but is never sent to a server by itself.
2. What we use
| Name | Kind | Purpose | Lasts | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| stg_consent | Cookie, first-party | Remembers your cookie choice | 12 months | Essential |
| stg_region | Cookie, first-party | Stores a region class (EU/UK/Switzerland, US or other) from your country so we show the right consent options | 24 hours | Essential |
| stg_theme | Browser storage | Remembers light or dark mode | Until you clear it | Preference |
| speedHistory | Browser storage | Keeps your last speed test results on your device | Until you clear it | Preference |
| _ga, _ga_* | Cookie, Google | Google Analytics: tells visits and pages apart to produce usage statistics | Up to 2 years | Analytics |
3. When they are used
Essential items are needed to remember your choice and run the site, so they do not need consent. Preference items only store settings or results on your own device.
Analytics follows your region. In the EU, UK and Switzerland it stays off until you accept. In other countries it runs by default and you can switch it off. Either way you can change your mind at any time.
SpeedTestGO does not show ads at the moment. If we add them, this page will list the advertising cookies before they are used.
4. How to change your choice
Open the consent settings here, or use Manage cookies in the footer on any page:
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you do, parts of the site such as remembering your theme may not work, but the speed test will.
