Common questions
What is DNS?
The Domain Name System turns names like example.com into the IP addresses computers use to find each other. A DNS lookup shows the records that make that translation work.
What do the record types mean?
A and AAAA records point a name to an IPv4 or IPv6 address. CNAME makes one name an alias of another. MX lists the mail servers. NS lists the servers that hold the domain's records. TXT holds text such as email and ownership settings. SOA describes the DNS zone.
What does TTL mean?
Time to live is how long, in seconds, other servers may keep a record before asking again. A low TTL means changes spread faster.
I changed a record. Why do I not see it yet?
Resolvers cache records until their TTL runs out, so a change can take from minutes to a day or more to show everywhere. Check the TTL shown on the old record to estimate the wait.
Why does a record type show as missing?
Not every domain has every type. A domain without a mail setup has no MX records, and a name that is a CNAME will not show A records of its own.
