Go from VGA to HDMI and vice versa [HOW TO]

VGA to HDMI is something a lot of people are still interested in.

If we look at today’s technology, video is moving away from analog(VGA) to digital format (HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort).

however, due to different ports on a computer or laptop, there are still situations where you need some of the old video technology like VGA or SVGA.

For those situations, you have VGA to HDMI converters or HDMI to VGA converters. These converters have certain limitations and expense differences.

In this article, we will look at both VGA to HDMI converters and HDMI to VGA converters, how they work, the signals, and how the conversion process works.

Tip: You should never use a VGA to HDMI for an HDMI to VGA and vice versa. This can cause damage to your electric device.

If you go into a store and are looking for a converter, always ask some questions or at least tell them what you are going to be using it for.

Do a speed test to know your Download speed, Upload speed, Jitter & Ping.

What are converters?

A normal converter is an electrical device that converts the voltage from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC).

These are not the converters we are talking about.

The converters we are talking about in the article convert digital signals to analog and vice versa.

These converters are easy to find in your local electrical shops or online shopping platforms like Amazon, eBay, and Walmart.

Before getting into any conversion methods, you’ll first need to understand what VGA and HDMI mean.

VGA stands for “Video Graphic Array.”

HDMI stands for “High-Definition Multimedia Interface.”

The two main definitive differences between HDMI and VGA are:

  1. the type of interface, with VGA being analog and HDMI being digital.
  2. VGA only provides you with video transmission, whereas HDMI involves audio and video transmission.

Because of these differences, you will require not only a cable when connecting an HDMI device to a VGA device, but for the conversion to properly occur, you will need an adapter as well.

Digital signals to Analog

Analog and Digital signals
Analog and Digital signals

The converter receives digital signals from the HDMI and then processes them and sends them as analog signals.

It supports both full HD resolutions and low resolutions, such as the 720p 1600 x 1200.

Let’s use a projector as an example.

You recently bought a projector that only has a VGA video port. The cable coming from your computer is HDMI for example.

This won’t work cause HDMI to VGA cannot work automatically out of the box.

An HDMI to VGA cable will also not work.

This is where a converter comes in handy. This converter would be called an HDMI to VGA converter, cause you are sending the video output from your computer that has an HDMI and want to convert that to VGA so you can still use the projector.

In other words, you are converting digital signals (HDMI) to analog signals (VGA).

Analog signals to Digital

Let’s use the same example but in this case, your computer only has VGA and your projector only has an HDMI port.

In this case, a converter isn’t needed. A VGA to HDMI cable should be able to do the job.

In other words, you are converting analog signals (VGA) to digital signals (HDMI).

Why will a cable work for Analog signals to Digital but not for Digital signals to Analog?

HDMI to VGA cables do not work for the very simple reason that active conversion does not occur within the cables.

For digital signals to convert to analog signals, you need an adapter containing a built-in chip where electronics convert the signals.

Beware of the many cheap HDMI to VGA cables being advertised heavily. The sellers are simply preying on uninformed people’s wallets.

Follow these steps to convert signals from HDMI to VGA using the converter:

What is needed:

  1. HDMI-VGA adapter
  2. VGA cable
  3. HDMI cable
  4. Auxiliary cord
  5. Source devices like computers or laptop
  6. Display devices like projector, monitor or TV

Step 1: Plug in the HDMI cable end to a source device. for example your computer or projector

Step 2: Plug in the VGA cable to the converter.

Step 3: Connect the other end of the VGA cable to the monitor, projector, or TV. The VGA connector is often found at the back of the TV, monitor, or projector.

Step 4: Power on your display screen, and it should now work.

Step 5: To listen to the audio, connect one end of the 3.5mm auxiliary cord to the source device and plug in the other end to the display device. There is also an audio port in the converter that can send audio to your display device if needed.

Most converters do not require additional power. However, some have a power port available if your device needs more power.

Step1: Connect the VGA cable to the computer’s VGA output.

Step2: Plug the remaining side of your VGA Cable into the VGA input of the converter box.

Step3: Connect the HDMI output to your converter box.

Step4: Plug the HDMI input port of your HDMI cable into the TV set or computer monitor.

Once you have turned on the computer and your HD Device, you will display the computer video on the HD device.

Conclusion

In conclusion, VGA to HDMI converters is pretty popular in today’s digital world. These converters make it easy to convert analog signals into digital signals and vice versa.

A lot of these converters are easy to find and have certain limitations and expense differences.

A useful tip is to always ask questions when buying something especially when you are on the lookout for a converter. You don’t want to end up buying the wrong converter. Always explain why you are buying it or for which you are going to use the converter.

We also learned that HDMI to VGA cables will never work because for the very simple reason that active conversions do not occur within cables. For that, you need an adapter containing a built-in chip where electronics convert the signals.

And finally, we hope that this article helped you with a better understanding of the digital world.
