What is an Internet Speed test?
An internet speed test is a diagnostic tool that measures various aspects of your internet connection. It’s like a health check-up for your online experience. SpeedTestGO, leverages advanced technology from Cloudflare to provide accurate insights into your connection performance.
What SpeedTestGO Measures:
- Download Speed: How quickly you can retrieve data from the internet.
- Upload Speed: The rate at which you can send data to the internet.
- Latency (Ping): The time it takes for data to travel between your device and our servers.
- Jitter: The variability in latency, affecting connection stability for real-time activities.
About Our Internet Speed Test Tool
SpeedTestGO utilizes Cloudflare’s extensive network, spanning over 300 cities globally. This ensures you’re testing against a server close to you, minimizing external factors that could skew your results. We use Cloudflare’s anycast network and smart BGP routing to find the nearest data center, providing a more accurate assessment of your ISP’s performance.
How the results are measured
We use Cloudflare’s anycast network for our tests. This means we find the closest data center to you using smart network routing, something called BGP. It is better than only guessing by location.
Here is what we measure:
- Download and Upload Speeds: We send different-sized files to see how fast your Internet is in handling them. We look at the speed that’s faster than 90% of the tests to give you a fair result.
- Ping: This is how fast your device and our servers can say “Hello” to each other. We measure the time it takes for your browser to start receiving data after you request it.
- Jitter: This measures the stability of your connection. We calculate how much your ping changes between tests and then average the difference.
Understanding Your Internet Speedtest Results
After the test, you’ll see some numbers. Here’s what they mean:
- Download Speed: This is how fast you can get things from the internet. Look for speeds of at least 25Mbps for smooth video streaming and online calling.
- Upload Speed: This denotes the speed at which you can send your stuff to the Internet. If you’re constantly sharing files or posting videos, then what could work out nicely for you is over 5Mbps.
- Ping: This will be an indicator of how quickly your device is communicating with the internet servers. The lower, the better. Below 20ms is great, 50-100ms is ok, and over 150ms might make for some noticeable delays.
- Jitter: Measures your connection consistency. Think of this in the same way as you would regard the consistency of your internet speed. Lower than 30ms is good.
Why are my numbers different from other speed tests?
Most of the items that impact the speed at which a speed test runs include network conditions, like the peering arrangements your ISP has, and how that routing affects movement to the Cloudflare edge. And the methodology of calculation for the result is one of the important factors.
We cannot say anything about how others calculate speeds, but we remain transparent on what we measure and how exactly it’s used further in result calculation. Raw measurements are downloadable after test performance, and our worker implementation is open source.
Frequently asked questions
Is upload supposed to be faster than download?
The download speed should nearly always be faster than your upload speed as the band for upload is much smaller than the band for download. If your download speed is slower than your upload speed, you should try to replace your router and call your ISP to run some line tests to detect the cause of the slow speeds.
What is a good internet speed?
A good internet speed depends on your internet usage. For basic internet usage such as browsing and email, a speed of 25 Mbps is sufficient. For streaming videos and gaming, a speed of 100 Mbps or higher is recommended.
Why is my internet speed slower than what I am paying for?
Several factors can affect your internet speed, including bandwidth, network congestion, distance from the server, ISP throttling, and outdated hardware and software.
How often should I test my internet speed?
It is recommended to test your internet speed at least once a month to ensure that you are getting the maximum internet speed that you are paying for.
How can I contact my ISP if I am experiencing slow internet speeds?
You can contact your ISP by calling their customer service hotline or visiting their website and submitting a support ticket.
